    Summary

    Andrew P. Combs, Ph.D., joined Incyte in 2003 where he is currently Vice President of Discovery Chemistry. He has led medicinal chemistry programs in oncology and inflammation to >10 nomination candidates during his ~19 year tenor in the pharmaceutical industry. INCB024360 (Epacadostat) - an IDO1 inhibitor, INCB054329 - a BRD inhibitor, and INCB050465 - a PI3Kd inhibitor are currently being studied in human clinical trials for oncology. He is also responsible for the Discovery Analytical, Chemical Technologies, Chemical Informatics and the Computational Chemistry departments. Prior to Incyte, Dr. Combs was a Director at Bristol-Myers Squibb and Dupont-Merck where he led programs in the CNS area and founded a >50 member cross-functional target-directed Parallel Synthesis Team. Andrew’s research interests embrace the application of innovative technologies to expedite the drug discovery process, such as fragment-based approaches, structure-based drug design, parallel synthesis, microwave-assisted synthesis and automated LCMS purification methods. He has published >100 research articles/book chapters, been granted >30 patents, presented numerous invited lectures, served on editorial boards of three scientific journals (currently J. Med. Chem. Letters), co-chaired >10 ACS conferences, served on a variety of NIH review panels, and currently is a member of the SAB for Boston University CMD and the University of Delaware NIH-funded COBRE. Dr. Combs was a HHMI post-doctoral fellow in the laboratories of Prof. Stuart L. Schreiber at Harvard from 1994-1996 and holds a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from UCLA and BS degrees in Chemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Dr. Jo Viney is Vice President, Immunology Research at Biogen in Cambridge, MA. In this role, Jo is responsible for setting scientific research direction and strategy with a focus on target identification and validation for drug discovery and development for treating patients with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Jo received her PhD from St Bartholomew’s Hospital, University of London in 1991 and pursued postdoctoral fellowships first at the Imperial cancer Research Fund in London, UK, and at Genentech in the Bay Area, California. Following her training, Jo joined Immunex in 1995 and remained at the company, which was acquired by Amgen in 2002, until leaving to join Biogen Idec. Jo has advanced a portfolio of novel biologic and small molecule programs, seven of which have progressed to IND and into clinical development, for diseases such rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease and lupus. Jo has maintained longstanding membership with the American Society of Immunologists (AAI), the British Society for Immunology (BSI) and the Society for Mucosal Immunology (SMI). She served as President of SMI from 2011-2013. Together with her SMI colleagues, she launched the journal Mucosal Immunology with Nature Publishing Group in 2007. Jo has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Keystone Symposia since 2008, and she partners with KS on a number of programs for under-represented scientists. She is also member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the BioAster Technology Research Institute (IRT) in France, and for Vaxart Inc in the Bay Area.

My particular area of interest revolves around understanding the mechanistic basis of immune homeostasis in organs susceptible to inflammatory disease. Past work has included investigating tolerogenic antigen presentation in the intestine, developing new mouse models of colitis and studying the function of novel butyrophilin-like (BTNL) inhibitory molecules.
I am the vice president of the immunology research group at Biogen. The group’s mission is to develop treatments for underserved immune-mediated inflammatory diseases associated with autoimmunity and fibrosis. Research extends from basic target identification and validation through to drug discovery and preclinical development.

Wendy B. Young has nineteen years of industrial drug discovery experience, having led discovery efforts at both small biotech firms (Axys/Celera and Scios: 1995-2006) and larger companies (Genentech/Roche: 2006-present). Wendy is currently Director of Medicinal Chemistry at Genentech, where she is a leader of project teams and directs a large group of medicinal chemists.
These teams have produced multiple clinical candidates, from a variety of target classes, currently under clinical evaluation in a range of indications.
She was recently elected as Vice Chair of the ACS Medicinal Chemistry (ACS MEDI) Division which will culminate in her being Chair of the Division in 2017.
Wendy received her Ph.D. from Princeton University under the direction of E.C. Taylor and carried out Postdoctoral Studies at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center with Professor Samuel Danishefsky.
Wendy is listed as an inventor or author on over 65 patent and research publications and has given presentations at many national and international meetings.

I was drawn to join Genentech, in 2006, because of its reputation for doing excellent science and employing strong teamwork. The organization is also very nimble and open-minded to incorporate processes to accelerate discovery and development. Today, I am Vice President of Discovery Chemistry, overseeing a highly talented and experienced group of medicinal, computational and analytical chemists. These Genentech chemists are integral on our project teams to innovate and discover the next generation of medicines to treat patients in need. What excites me the most is that, at Genentech, we have the brightest people, tools, and know-how to continue to make huge strides in solving complex biological and medical issues. Proudest professional accomplishment: I was team leader for seven years on an important drug development project where there’s a lot of industry competition. We had to overcome many obstacles but I believed in the project and in the science and wouldn’t give up. We ultimately discovered the root of the problem and presented the data to regulators, and they allowed us to move the medicine into the clinic. Our team emerged as a really tight-knit group because we wouldn’t give up as we had a strong passion for the end goal. It was a great example of how perseverance is key.




How to help women in business advance: What I’ve learned is that to succeed, you must have achievement. You’ll get more visibility by racking up achievements. Don’t be distracted by sideline activities because it takes away time and energy from things that will really matter. Be brave. Speak up. Figure out how to find your voice.
