Dr. Vandana B. Patravale, Professor of Pharmaceutics at the prestigious Institute of Chemical technology (previously, UDCT), has guided over 60 postgraduate students and currently, her laboratory comprises a team of 24 students including 15 Ph.D. (Tech.) Research Fellows. Her areas of expertise encompass lipid and colloidal drug delivery systems including microemulsions, solid lipid nanoparticles and polymeric nanoparticles for enhanced solubilization, bioavailability and targeting. Her interests additionally include medical device development, use of indigenous excipients, cosmeceuticals and modified release dosage forms designed for various routes of administration.

Prof. Patravale owns 3 granted patents and 4 trademark registries with 15 additional filed patents in pipeline that include European as well as US patents. She has over 50 publications in peer reviewed journals and has delivered over 150 invited talks. An active consultant to the pharmaceutical industry on nanotechnology based dosage form design, Prof. Patravale is also known for her expertise in developing cardiovascular stents. Further, Prof. Patravale receives and elucidates multifarious projects from the pharmaceutical industry at ICT.

A recipient of many Government and private grants including DBT, ICMR, DST, AICTE, UGC and all other major grants, Prof. Patravale currently has four DBT projects, one Indo-Swiss joint project, one ICMR project and two projects from private industry apart from others which are being conducted under her supervision. She has been awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from her Alma matter K. M. Kundanani College of Pharmacy and is adjudged Best Teacher at ICT in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology Department. She has also received Belgium Scholarship and has a meritorious academic background. Prof Vandana B. Patravale is member of various national and International professional bodies and is an expert member, DSIR. She is a reviewer for many international journals including International Journal of  Pharmaceutics, Journal of  Pharmacy  and  Pharmacology , Powder Technology, AAPS PharmSciTech, Journal of  Controlled Release to name a few. She has authored 3 invited book chapters and 15 invited review articles. She has actively participated in various symposia and conferences around the globe and her research students have won scientific paper/poster awards at international forums. She has been actively collaborating with various Government and private institutes in India and abroad including Japan, Germany and Switzerland.

जगभरात प्रत्येक गोष्टीचे नॅनोकरण सुरू असताना लसींचेही नॅनोकरण होणे गरजेचे आहे. हीच बाब लक्षात


जगभरात प्रत्येक गोष्टीचे नॅनोकरण सुरू असताना लसींचेही नॅनोकरण होणे गरजेचे आहे. हीच बाब लक्षात घेऊन जगभरात संशोधन सुरू आहे. यामध्ये मुंबईतील रसायनशास्त्र संस्थेत प्राध्यापक म्हणून काम करणाऱ्या वंदना पत्रावळे यांचा अग्रक्रम लागतो आहे. त्यांनी ब्रुसिलोसिस या दुर्धर आजारावर प्रतिबंधात्मक नाकावाटे शरीरात सोडणारी लस तयार करण्याचे काम सुरू केले असून त्याला लवकरच मूर्त स्वरूप प्राप्त होणार आहे.

ब्रुसिलोसिस या आजारावर उपचारांसाठी लसीचे संशोधन व्हावे यासाठी बिल आणि मेलिंडा गेट्स फाऊंडेशनने पुढाकार घेतला आहे. या संस्थेच्यावतीने या विषयात संशोधन करणाऱ्या वैज्ञानिकांना आवाहन करण्यात आले होते. या आवाहनाला जगभरातील २७०० वैज्ञानिकांनी प्रतिसाद दिला. यातून पत्रावळे यांची निवड झाली.

ब्रुसिलोसिस हा आजार जनावरांकडून माणसांकडे येत असतो. शरीराची हाडे खिळखिळी करून सोडणाऱ्या या आजाराने जगभरात लाखो लोक हैराण आहेत. दुभत्या जनावरांकडून या आजाराचा प्रादुर्भाव मोठय़ा प्रमाणावर होत असतो. तसेच प्राणीजन्य पदार्थ खाल्यामुळेही या रोगाची लागण होते. हा रोग संसर्ग असल्यामुळे या रोगाची भीती दिवसेंदिवस वाढू लागली आहे. ही बाब लक्षात घेऊन यावर प्रभावी औषध शोधणे ही जागतिक गरज बनली. यातूनच पत्रावळे आणि त्यांच्या विद्यार्थिनी स्वाती व्यास आणि प्रियांका प्रभू यांनी या संशोधनाला सुरुवात झाली. पत्रावळे या तयार करत असलेल्या लसीचे वैशिष्टय़ म्हणजे ही लस माणूस आणि जनावर अशा दोघांसाठी उपयुक्त असणार आहे.


जगभरातील २७०० संशोधकांना मागे टाकत नॅनोलसीकरणाच्या संशोधनात गेट्स फाऊंडेशनची तब्बल एक लाख अमेरिकन्स डॉलर्सच्या अभ्यासवृत्तीवर मुंबईतील मराठी प्राध्यापिकेने आपले नाव कोरले. या प्राध्यापिका रसायनशास्त्र संस्थेत काम करत असून त्यांनी आणि त्यांच्या विद्यार्थिनींनी नाकावाटे देता येणारी ही लस तयार करण्याचा चंग बांधला आहे.


इतकेच नव्हे तर ही लस नैसर्गिक घटकांपासून तयार करण्यात आलेली आहे. यामध्ये कोणत्याही प्रकारच्या सेंद्रिय द्रव्याचा वापर होणार नसल्याची माहिती पत्रावळे यांनी दिली. यामुळे संस्थेने पत्रावळे यांची निवड केली असून त्यांना या संशोधनासाठी तब्बल एक लाख अमेरिकन डॉलर्सचा निधी उपलब्ध करून दिला आहे. यासाठी त्यांना १८ महिन्यांचा कालावधी देण्यात आला असून हे संशोधन आता पूर्णत्वाच्या दिशेने असल्याचे पत्रावळे यांनी स्पष्ट केले. ही लस आर्थिकदृष्टय़ा परवडणारी करण्याकडे या संशोधन गटाचा भर असल्याचेही पत्रावळे यांनी स्पष्ट केले. यापूर्वी पत्रावळे यांनी मलेरिया, कर्करोग, मेंदूचे विकार आदी संसर्गजन्य आजारांवर प्रभावी औषधांची निर्मिती केली म्हणून पत्रावळे आणि त्यांच्या गटाला नुकतेच इटली येथे पार पडलेल्या ‘नॅनोइटली-१३’ या परिषदेत ‘वेनेटो नॅनोटेक’ पुरस्काराने सन्मानित करण्यात आले आहे. यामुळे त्यांना या संशोधनाला प्रोत्साहन मिळाल्याचे त्या सांगतात.



Institute of Chemical Technology gets grant to develop nanovaccine for nasal immunization against brucellosis

A research team from Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai receives a prestigious grant to develop the first green nanovaccine for nasal immunization against brucellosis from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Prof. Vandana Patravale, ICT, Matunga was awarded $100,000 in phase I of Grand Challenges Explorations Round 11 for developing the cost-effective vaccine technology from over 2700 applications. The sub-unit nanovaccine aims to confer long term protective immunity to humans and livestock population.

“The vaccine is based on naturally derived components and would be fabricated using an eco-friendly process eliminating the use of hazardous organic solvents”, says Prof. Patravale.

Prof. Patravale’s team at ICT, led by Swati Vyas and Priyanka Prabhu, doctoral students in conceptualized the initiative stirred by an ongoing research project in Prof. Patravale’s group concerning detection of brucellosis. Swati would be pursuing the proposed vaccine project funded by the Gates Foundation with Prof. Patravale.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic bacterial infection with a potential to be exploited as a bioweapon, and currently no human vaccine is available for treatment. The disease annually affects over 500,000 individuals across the globe. Prevalent in developing areas of Mediterranean province, Western Asia, the Middle East and areas of Africa and Latin America, the disease commonly affects domestic animals such as cattle, goats, sheep and swine, and is greatly responsible for causing abortions especially in cattle. Brucellosis in humans is largely an occupational hazard that spreads through contact, air and consumption of unpasteurized dairy products.

Whole cell attenuated vaccines such as Rev1 and S19 are currently available for livestock animals; however carry the risk of eliciting a full blown infection, especially in animal handlers and clinical laboratory personnel. Moreover, current vaccines are administered invasively causing pain and discomfort to the vaccinee. The innovation, administered intranasally, would provide a painless solution with potential to translate into a mass vaccination campaign to curb spread of brucellosis. The researchers propose to develop the unique technology with the aim to make it largely affordable. Prof. Sharmila B. Majee, Head at the Department of Microbiology, Bombay Veterinary College, Parel, Mumbai, regularly encounters clinical samples at her laboratory and says accomplishing vaccination against brucellosis is challenging and the technology will help bring forth a disease prevention strategy towards promoting animal and public health.

Patil Best Pharmaceutical Scientist of the year Award - 2014”. This prestigious award is given by the Association of Pharmaceutical Teachers of India (APTI), Maharashtra State in recognition to the relentless, inspirational and selfless service by the scientist to the pharmacy profession. The award was bestowed on her by honourable  Prof. C. Chandaben Mohanbhai Patel Industrial Research Award for Women Scientists - 2013 by Vividhlaxi Audyogik Samshodhan Vikas Kendra (VASVIK) Apex Committee. This is a prestigious national award given to women scientists in recognition to their extraordinary industrial research and it is in execution since year 1981. This award is bestowed upon Prof. Patravale for her outstanding research, especially in area of coronary stents and intra uterine devices.

VASVIK is a non-profit, non-government organisation established in 1974 and run by the owners of the Patel Extrusion Group. With a vision to promote industrial research, science and technology in India, the organization presents nine annual VASVIK Industrial Research Awards in various categories to an individual or group of individuals in honour of their exceptional research achievements. 

This year, the award ceremony is scheduled in December 2014, where Prof. Vandana B. Pataravle will be felicitated by Honourable Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi.
