Honorary degrees of University of Rennes 1 awarded to Dr. Jhillu Singh Yadav
Dr. Jhillu Singh Yadav is an internationally recognized organic chemist.
He has made very important contributions to the development of novel synthetic methodologies and their application to the preparation of challenging bioactive molecules, especially in the areas of agrochemicals and drugs. Moreover, this research has been usually performed in connection with chemical and pharmaceutical industries leading to over 150 patents and many implemented industrial processes. He has published more than 1100 papers, guided close to 200 PhD students and obtained numerous awards both in India and abroad.
For almost 20 years he has established close connections with the Chemistry Department at the University of Rennes 1. This started with several Indo-French CEFIPRA-supported research programs. One of them is particularly significant since it led to the industrial development of Misoprostol, a drug which is now commercialized by Avra Laboratories in Hyderabad. This fruitful cooperation culminated in 2004 with the creation of the "Indo-French Joint Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry at Interfaces" and the opening of a dedicated laboratory in the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT Hyderabad).
Due in particular to the action of Dr. Yadav as Director of IICT, this Indo-French Associated International Laboratory (AIL/LIA) linking CNRS/University of Rennes 1 and CSIR/IICT Hyderabad proved to be highly successful from a scientific point of view, having produced 50 common publications already by Rennes and Hyderabad chemists.
Moreover it proved to be very active through the exchange of scientists and students. During the last ten years, more than 20 scientists from Rennes visited IICT to give lectures or to participate to international conferences. Furthermore, over 60 students from the University of Rennes 1 were hosted for 1-6 months internships in IICT. All these contributions established this AIL/LIA as a model Joint Lab for international cooperations. Therefore it is only natural that the University of Rennes 1 should recognize the high-level scientific contributions of Dr. Yadav, as well as his long term strong connections with Rennes, by delivering an "Honorary PhD (Docteur Honoris Causa)" grade to him.
