Sobia Ahsan Halim (Personal Introduction)
I, Sobia Ahsan Halim was born on 31st August 1983 in Karachi, the largest city of Pakistan. I am second child of my parents, having an elder and a younger brother. My mother is one who provided me early education since I was a child and it was her dream that her children get higher education. She encouraged me throughout my career to accomplish Ph. D. I passed matriculation examination from Aisha Children Paradise School, North Nazimabad-Karachi. After passing intermediate in Pre-Medical discipline in 2001, I got admission in Jinnah University for Women, Karachi and completed M. Sc. in Biochemistry in 2005. I secured 1st class 1st position in the department of Biochemistry, J.U.W. in B. Sc. (H) as well as in M. Sc. Working in laboratories during graduation; I used to think how these scientific procedures help to improve human lives. Since then I got interest in research. I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to start my research career as a thesis student (M. Sc. thesis) with Dr. Sadaf Naeem (Former Lecturer, Dept. of Biochemistry, J.U.W) in collaboration with Dr. Zaheer-ul-Haq Qasmi (Assistant Professor, PCMD, ICCBS, University of Karachi) under the project entitled “Different Docking Approached to Explore Protein-Ligand Interactions”. This was the beginning of the fascinating time of my life when I started learning what research is and how to pursue it? During M. Sc. Thesis, I learned some docking techniques which developed my interest in a new and very exciting field of Computational Medicinal Chemistry. Soon after M. Sc., I decided to pursue Ph. D. in Computational Medicinal Chemistry under the supervision of my dear teacher and mentor Dr. Qasmi in 2006. I am fortunate in completing my Ph. D. studies on the topic “Modeling Aided Lead Design of Cytokines Inhibitors”. During M.Phil/Ph. D. program, I passed all the M. Phil. and Ph. D. courses and Molecular Medicine Subjective GRE and NTS general and Subjective GAT tests and got command over several structure and ligand based drug designing techniques. In 2009, I was granted six months split Ph. D. scholarship (December 2009-June 2010) under “International Research Support Initiative Program” from Higher Education Commission Pakistan that help me to study at School of Pharmacy, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, IllinoisUSA. There I carried out my research project entitles “A Structure Guided Fragment Library through Massive Screening of Chemogenomics” under the supervision of Dr. Maria Kontoyianni (Assistant Professor, School of Pharmacy, SIUE). During my research, I was able enough to publish couple of research articles in peer review scientific journals of international repute. In 2012, I received scholarship from Brazilian Agriculture Research Corporation (ESPCA) to attend the course of “Computational Biology-Agrochemical and Drug Design” held in Sao Paulo School of Advanced Sciences (ESPCA), Campinas, Brazil (April 1-6, 2012). There I won the Best poster award titled “The Role of Computer-Aided Drug Design in the identification of Cytokines Inhibitors” among hundred participants of over forty countries. This course helped me to understand the role of Computational Biology in Agriculture. My keen interest is to identify novel therapeutic compounds which can be used to cure diseases and pathological conditions, to understand the drug-receptor interactions at the molecular level through computational tools and to generate large virtual compound libraries which can be used freely throughout the academic/scientific community and serves as recognition of our institute and country.
