Success Stories

Indigenous Scholar’s Work Published in Angewandte Chemie International Edition.
The research work of Dr. Rohama Gill, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences, Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU), Rawalpindi has been published inAngewandte Chemie International Edition.
Dr. Gill completed her PhD in Inorganic/Analytical Chemistry in 2009 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. M. Mazhar, Department of Chemistry, Quaid-i-Azam University. She was awarded HEC’s Indigenous PhD Scholarship. The title of her research is Synthesis and characterization of block Copolymers derived from germanium dicarboxylic acids and aminopropyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane. During her PhD studies, she was also awarded HEC’s International Research Support Initiative Programme (IRSIP) scholarship, for pursuing her research work at Université Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France, where she had the chance to work under the guidance of Dr. Gero Decher, Professeur classe exceptionelle, a world renowned scientist and pioneer of Layer by Layer Multilayers Nanofabrication technique of Polymers. During her stay in France, she learned to handle various instruments which gave a new direction to her project. She worked on an entirely new technique of Nanofabrication of Polymer Multilayer via Layer by Layer method which has innumerable applications in the field of Environmental/Industrial Chemistry.
Using Polydimethylsiloxane derivatives, Dr. Gill has been able to optimize the conditions for covalent layer-bylayer assembly to the point of identifying reaction conditions for this surface reaction that led to the construction of multilayers with a linear growth increment with respect to the numbers of layers chemisorbed. The results of this project are so solid and so interesting that fruit of this hard is now manifested in the form of her publication in Angewandte Chemie International Edition, one of the leading international journals in the field of Chemistry with the impact factor of 11.829 - a rare and coveted honour for a Pakistani scientist.
“I am grateful to the Higher Education Commission for its generous benefaction throughout my higher studies especially for my PhD through the Indigenous Scholarship Programme and also for facilitating my research in France through the International Research Support Initiative Programme (IRSIP),” says Dr. Gill.
