Loredana Cappellacci is Associate Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, School of Pharmacy, at University of Camerino.
She started her research activity with Prof Grifantini at the Department of Chemical Sciences, University of Camerino since 1989.
Fellow (January 3, 1989 – March 15, 1993),
then Researcher in Medicinal Chemistry (CHIM/08) (March 16, 1993 – September 30, 2007),
and Associate Professor in Medicinal Chemistry (CHIM/08) since October 1, 2007 at the School of Pharmacy, University of Camerino.
In September 2004, she was selected as suitable to be Associate Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
Visiting Scientist at SOUTHERN RESEARCH INSTITUTE in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, (July 28, 1997- August 6, 1998) working in the team of Prof. John A. SECRIST III on a research project under the auspices of a NIH grant that supported research designed to develop new anticancer drugs.
One of the synthesized compounds, 4'-thio-araC (Thiarabine), has been recently licensed to Assess Pharmaceuticals Inc. and is in phase I/II of clinical development for treatment of solid tumors and in phase II for treatment of lymphoma and leukaemia, and more recently preclinical data demonstrated its remarkable efficacy in the prevention and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Supervisor of PhD theses in Medicinal Chemistry (2006-2009 and 2012-2013).
Delegate for Tutorship at Faculty of Pharmacy (November 19, 2008 - January 25, 2012).

Member of the Organizing Committee of the International Meeting “THIRD JOINT ITALIANGERMAN PURIN CLUB MEETING Purinergic Receptors: New Frontiers for Novel Therapies”, held in Camerino on July 17-20, 2009. Participant in research projects on AIDS funded by Italian Ministry of Health (1991-2001) and National Ministry of University and Scientific Research (PRIN 1997, 2002, 2004, 2006).
Currently, Local Scientific Coordinator of a research project financed by MIUR (PRIN 2009). Peer reviewer of international journals: Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Bioorganic Medicinal Chemistry and Antioxidants & Redox Signaling and of a National Medical Research Council (NMRC) Research Grant Proposal.
She is member of Purine Club and Medicinal Chemistry Division of the Italian Chemical Society. Loredana Cappellacci is author of 71 publications in leading international peer-review journals, one Patent in the anti-HIV drugs’ field, one U.S. Patent in the antitumor drugs’ field and more than 130 communications to national and international meetings.
A recent published paper (J. Med. Chem. 2009, 52, 2393-2406) has been cited by Nature (SciBX 2(14); doi:10.1038/scibx.2009.592) and has been praised by local and international newspapers.
Her scientific interests focus on: 1) nucleosides and nucleotides as antitumor and antiviral agents and their prodrugs; 2) enzyme inhibitors as antitumor and, more recently, as antimicrobial agents; 3) adenosine receptor (AR) ligands, in particular A1AR agonists, useful in the treatment of neuropathic pain.
