Dr. Rajapakse received her Ph.D. in Chemistry in 2008 from Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in the Ohio Laboratory for Kinetic Spectroscopy under the supervision of Dr. Michael A. J. Rodgers.  Her research focused on excited state deactivation pathways for transition metal- meso tetraphenyltetrabenzoporphyrins (MTPTBPs), which show promise as photothermal therapy (PTT) agents for cancer treatment.  Dr. Rajapakse studied MTPTBPs experimentally, using femtosecond transient absorption, and theoretically with DFT/TDDFT calculations.  As a graduate student at BGSU, Dr. Rajapakse also studied platinum (ІІ) terpyridyl complexes for use as photocatalysts to produce hydrogen in homogeneous solutions.





 NEPAL

After graduate school, Dr. Rajapakse joined McPherson College, where she taught several courses including Introductory Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Introductory Physics, College Physics, Geology and Astronomy labs.  She joined the A. R. Smith Department of Chemistry at Appalachian in 2010 and taught Introductory Chemistry and Organic Chemistry; later that year, she was offered the Organic Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator position and has coordinated the Organic Labs since then.
Dr. Rajapakse holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biological Sciences from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in Sri Lanka, and a Master of Science in Environmental Management from Victoria University in Australia.
With a strong interdisciplinary background, Dr. Rajapakse has wide array of research interests. More recently, her research in chemical education has incorporated the principles of green chemistry in the development of new organic laboratory experiments.
